First Timer Recollections
It's
not too often in today's work environment that I can write something on a
positive note. However, I must say
in writing now, as I had discussed with Devera Kazmerski in person the last day
of the state convention…. I am
hooked!
As
a first timer, I was warmly received into this professional, caring and
wonderful bunch of Postmasters. The agenda was informative, the information discussed and
distributed was timely, and just meeting and discussing common issues was a new
resource for me.
I
now know that I am not "alone" out there in my little Post Office, but
part of a much bigger and better entity. I
have made many new friends, have put a face with a name, and am more prouder (is
that a word?) than ever to say that I am a Postmaster!
My
only regret is that I will not be able to attend the National Convention this
year due to a conflict with the dates. However, I look forward to seeing
everyone next year at the State Convention!
Oh, and OB. Devera and Jo….thank you for taking me "under your
wings" during my first convention.
P.S.
The chocolate martini's were excellent!
They were a first for me also!

What
can I say about my experience as a 1st Timer at the PA League of
Postmasters Convention?
Seriously,
You all made me feel welcome and included in everything. The program and
training was wonderful! The hotel, food, etc were top-notch!!
But
best of all was the feeling that I had been adopted by the PA League of
Postmasters and all its members. I will look forward to attending the next
convention and the next “TEXAS HOLD’EM” contest!!

Hi
I tend to get windy when writing so I give you my permission to edit and/or remove anything that may be irrelevant, inappropriate, or just plain stupid.
Thanks, Joan
I have been asked to share my experience as a first-timer at the PA State League of Postmasters Convention. My perception may be a little different than most first-timers because I was fortunate enough to be attending with Jo Oberly and Devera Kazmerski. Therefore, I did not attend alone as a lot of others do.
The most impressive observation for me was how committed the members of this organization are in welcoming new members. If someone is sitting alone or standing alone, there is no hesitation on their part in approaching the individual to make them feel welcome. They practice what they preach.
The time spent seemed adequately proportioned between learning sessions and recreation. I am not a Postmaster…I am a window clerk in a Level 18 office. I found the information to be relevant and current to the job I do every day. The PM’s asked questions which resulted in scenarios and “what ifs” that we as clerks usually deal with everyday. These suggestions could and should be taken back to their offices and shared.
In addition, the facility was located in an area where additional recreational activities were readily available. (Such as whitewater rafting!!!) It was great!
I suppose, other than the GREAT time I had, the thing I realized the most was in regard to OIC assignments. I have been on many of them. Sometimes you are assigned to an office that is a little challenging to you. Your knowledge of some of the procedures is limited and in some cases non-existent. I remember feeling overwhelmed, without a clue as to where I could receive some unofficial help. Sometimes the questions you need to ask seem stupid and something you should already know! I know we are assigned a PM “mentor” of sorts, however, they are usually too busy with other issues of their own.
If I were to go out on an assignment now, I would not hesitate to call any of the PM’s I met at this event for help. More clerks should go! It inspires the dreaded – “Upward Mobility”!!!
Thanks for reading….

Fellow League Members:
I attended the PA League of Postmasters State Convention as a First Timer this year. I was given the opportunity to assist at the registration desk. I have to admit, I was nervous at first, but what a perfect way to meet the other League Members and guests! The training sessions were very informative. I am always receptive when there is a chance to gain some knowledge that will aide me in my duties. The hospitality room was a great place to get acquainted with everyone. I enjoyed listening to their stories from previous conventions and learning how to play Texas Hold 'Em. Let's talk a little bit about the accommodations and food, they were excellent!
I would like to send a special thank you out to the PM of the Year, Devera, for convincing me to attend the convention. I truly enjoyed myself. Everyone made me feel welcome. It was a good mix between business and pleasure. I am looking forward to attending next year's state convention and seeing all of you there!
For any member of the League who hasn't attended a state convention, I strongly recommend it.
